for string trio (2020, 11')

Memo for string trio was written for the Symphony 2030 - Stage your Voice project of the Residentie Orkest. It was filmed on location in the Hague on 17-18 June 2020, and premiered live in the Zuiderstrandtheater The Hague on 4 October 2020, by Justyna Briefjes (violin), Elisabeth Runge (viola) and Miriam Kirby (cello).

The piece was created to be performed in parallel with texts by three young spoken word writers from The Hague, Benita Bocoum, Jemaya Douwes and Reno Els. The texts cover themes such as acceptance, anxiety, loneliness, repression, unity and love. The music offers each of the three writers their own 'signature' music, supports the themes, and provides the texts with musical repartee.

Although the piece was conceived for this spoken word context, it can also be performed by string trio alone, as a concertante piece. The textual content in this setting being absent, the establishing of characters, moods and narrative will be transported to a more abstract setting, in which the three string players come front stage as sole narrators...
