Hungry, thirsty
for saxophone quartet (2022, 7')
Hungry, Thirsty was commissioned by the Maat Saxophone Quartet, by whom it was premiered on 18 June 2022 at TivoliVredenburg, Utrecht, The Netherlands.
This work takes the instrumental fado music of Coimbra, Portugal, as an inspiration, in particular Carlos Paredes' song Sede. Its lulling 6/8 meter and rhythm, as well as some associations with its motivic material, appear in Hungry, Thirsty. The homogeneous and embracing combination of the Portuguese guitar and classical acoustic guitar is exchanged for the equally homogeneous but very dynamic and rich instrumentation of the saxophone quartet. And the mellow nature of Paredes' music is contrasted with somewhat bemusing and partly fierce material. Some outbursts, particularly toward the end of the work, touch on mental upset, evoking a sense of hunger and thirst...
Although Hungry, thirsty is a fully autonomous work, not created to emulate the fado of Coimbra, a shadow of this wonderful melancholic music can still be discerned.
The composition of Hungry, thirsty was kindly supported by the Dutch Fonds Podiumkunsten.
