SCRAMBLED
for ensemble and electronics (2022, 20')
SCRAMBLED, for ensemble and electronics, was written for Asko|Schoenberg, for the Words and Music festival on 3 September in the Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ Amsterdam.
It is a work for nine instrumentalists and three so-called sound scouts. The instrumental ensemble is divided in three quartets: 1) baritone saxophone, piano, viola, sound scout 1; 2) trombone, harp, violoncello, sound scout 2; and 3) oboe, percussion, double bass, sound scout 3. The three quartets operate partly as independent units; sometimes they perform as a full ensemble.
Inspiration and compositional input for SCRAMBLED was found in the rich, expressive and utterly idiosyncratic speaking voice of William S. Burroughs.
The composition of SCRAMBLED was kindly supported by the Dutch Fonds Podiumkunsten.
